Questions that make sense

What is the difference between a storm shelter and a tornado shelter?

DON’T BE FOOLED! Storm shelters are designed and tested to give near-absolute protection to their occupants. Most storm shelters do not meet the national performance criteria set by FEMA, and they cannot take a direct hit from a tornado, so you can be trapped in a cellar. Metal structures can also conduct electricity from lightning, home electrical, and powerlines.

On the other hand, the Oz Saferoom™ is engineered with monolithic concrete and tested and proven to take a direct hit from a tornado, save lives, and sustain no damage! All safe room criteria in the FEMA publications meet or exceed the shelter requirements of the ICC-500.

How do I know the OZ Saferoom® will keep me safe?
Not only does the OZ Saferoom conform with every code, regulation, FEMA standard, and the ICC 500, but it has also undergone extreme testing. It has passed two finite analysis tests by the Rochester Institute of Technology. Most importantly, the OZ Saferoom is the ONLY safe room to take a direct hit from an F5 tornado (in Moore, Oklahoma) and sustain NO DAMAGE. The OZ Saferoom saves lives and is a documented FEMA mitigation success story.
A safe room or an underground shelter? Which is safer?

A record-breaking torrential downpour caused flooding in Oklahoma, making many underground shelters impossible to use. Shortly after, people were put on alert for possible tornadoes, and they had nowhere to go for safety. In underground structures, people also experienced:

  • Entrapment
  • Suffocation
  • Drowning
  • Gas Asphyxiation (gas settles at the lowest point)
  • Mold (Thrives in cellars. Some molds are deadly!)

Meanwhile, the owners of an OZ Saferoom® didn’t have this worry. They were safe in their OZ™ safe rooms. Therefore, an above-ground safe room is much safer than an underground shelter.

Is the OZ Saferoom® tested, and is it FEMA-approved?

Yes, the OZ Saferoom® is tested and FEMA-approved. When the OZ Saferoom® was first introduced to homeowners through the Project Impact program, it was the only way FEMA would provide Rebates for saferooms. Once every septic and backhoe company jumped on the program, FEMA no longer “Approved” any structure, and the rebate money was given to the state through block grants and distributed through the city Emergency Management Departments. The OZ Saferoom® door was tested, and it was the only door that passed before the current impact test became standard.
After 2008, the 2×4 impact test became the industry standard. The OZ Door currently holds an impact test report stating it conforms to the FEMA 320, FEMA 361, and ICC 500 guidelines requirements. The OZ Saferoom® is the only saferoom available that meets the strict requirements set by FEMA in the National Performance Criteria.

Is the OZ Saferoom® NSSA approved or Texas Tech Tested?

The OZ Saferoom® extreme testing, taking a direct hit from a supertwister, sustaining no damage, and saving lives (A FEMA Mitigation Success Story) makes it a true Tornado Shelter. No other above ground storm shelter can claim they have taken a direct hit with no damage. The National Storm Shelter Association certifies “Storm Shelters” as being guaranteed to give the occupants “Near absolute protection during wind events.”

The OZ Saferoom® has been provided to homeowners since 1999 before the creation of the NSSA. These safe rooms were developed at the request of FEMA in upstate NY, tested in NY and Florida, studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and proven in Oklahoma! Its success is even shown on the Texas Tech storm shelter research website, where Dr. Kiesling stood inside on the day after two OZ Saferooms took a direct hit from a supertwister in Moore, Oklahoma (with wind speeds exceeding 265 mph!).

What sizes of OZ Saferooms are available?

OZ Saferooms come in various sizes to protect everyone from tornadoes or harsh weather conditions. We offer models for 6, 8, 10, and 13 people and larger options of 64, 90, and 112 square feet. Some models are wheelchair accessible for added convenience.
